What Is YNSA?

Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture (YNSA) is a comprehensive system for evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment using acupuncture. Developed in the 1960s by Japanese physician Dr. Toshikatsu Yamamoto, YNSA was first presented in 1973 at the Ryodoraku Congress in Osaka.

Initially consisting of five basic points on the forehead, YNSA has evolved into an extensive microsystem covering not only the scalp but other regions of the body. Today, YNSA is the second most widely practiced microsystem in the world, following auriculotherapy.

About Dr. Toshikatsu Yamamoto

Dr. Toshikatsu Yamamoto, affectionately known as “Toshi,” revolutionized Japanese acupuncture. A trained anesthesiologist and gynecologist, he began treating patients with musculoskeletal pain in his hometown of Nichinan. A serendipitous event — a painless injection that relieved a patient — inspired him to explore acupuncture deeply, eventually developing his innovative and effective method.

At his hospital, over 2,000 surgeries were performed under acupuncture anesthesia, including cesareans, appendectomies, hysterectomies, and amputations — along with countless treatments for hemiplegia and chronic pain.

Dr. Yamamoto’s legacy extends beyond his medical genius: he is admired for his humility, perseverance, compassion, and generosity in teaching.
